Pay Their Way

Looking for a way to strengthen your relationship with your tech support team? Pay for their expenses to attend a workshop. That could be a simple workshop in your area that will only cost you about $100 per person including the workshop registration fee, gas and meals. A number of workshops cost $500 or more for the registration fee, and might require a plane ticket and a few nights lodging before it's over. It's still worth your investing in the team.

The entire congregation will benefit as your team puts their new knowledge to work, and the morale of your tech support team will get a huge boost. Why? Because your investment in them said that you believe in them louder than words could ever do.

These guys have such a commitment to learning the craft that many are willing to take vacation days from work and pay their own way to attend workshops. Why not bless them for their efforts and pay their way?

Still not convinced? Try adding up what it would cost you if you were paying your volunteer tech support team the going rate – $15 to $25 per hour or more – to work each week. Let's see, an average of 20 hours per week per man times even just $15/hour, times 52 weeks each year, times two people? If you paid your crew what they were worth, your church would be spending a minimum of $15,000 to well over $60,000 per year! Do the math. It's in the church's favor to pay their way.

I'm not suggesting that your team should get spoiled and start expecting this treatment, or that they should demand it from the church. But I am suggesting that the local church owes their tech support team a great deal, and this is one small way in which the church can tell the tech crew each year that they are appreciated and valued.

There is tremendous benefit in sending several members of a team to the same workshop. If one person attends a workshop, they'll come back with a lot of good knowledge to put into use. If two people attend, they'll both come back with that knowledge as well as the camaraderie of that shared experience and a renewed energy to make things look and sound great. They'll both be on the same page, and will better understand each other as they work on a problem or set the stage.

Well, imagine what could happen if you were to send six, or eight, or ten members of the tech support team and the worship team to a workshop that had classes designed for each area of interest? The results can be extremely powerful. The more people that benefit, the more powerful – and noticeable – the results will be. Integrity Music holds workshops that offer performance and songwriting classes as well as basic audio classes.

At least a basic level of training is important for the key person and the volunteers in your tech support ministry and for the music minister.
